Support Through the NDIS
No matter how your NDIS funding is managed - Self Managed, Plan Managed, or NDIA Managed - we are committed to partnering with you to help achieve your goals, enhance your independence, and support you in living the life you choose. The NDIS can provide access to a wide range of musculoskeletal supports and prosthetic devices tailored to your needs.
Eligibility for NDIS Support
To access the NDIS, individuals must:
- Under 65 years of age (at time of admission to the NDIS)
- Have a permanent disability
- Require support for the rest of their lives
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to equipment or devices that supports people with disabilities in their everyday lives. This includes devices like prosthetic limbs and orthotic braces designed to enhance mobility and independence.
3 Ways to Manage your NDIS Funding:
1. Self Managed
If your NDIS funding is self-managed, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) allocates funds directly to you, giving you the flexibility to choose and pay for the supports that best align with your plan goals. You’ll manage payments through the NDIS portal and pay providers directly for services, reviews, consumables & devices.
2. Plan Managed
If your NDIS funding is plan-managed, the NDIA pays your chosen Plan Management Agency (a third-party provider), who then handles payments to your service providers—like us—on your behalf. You have the freedom to select a Plan Manager who will assist with management of your budget and manage your invoices.
3. NDIA Managed
With NDIA-managed funding, the NDIA pays your service providers directly. If your plan includes available funds, providers will submit payment requests for supports, consumables, and Assistive Technology (AT) devices through the NDIS portal. This streamlined process allows for immediate access to funding, helping to speed up service delivery.
Important: Only NDIS-registered providers are eligible to deliver services under NDIA-managed funding.
Steps to Register for the NDIS
Not already supported by the NDIS? Follow the steps below to begin your process to access NDIS support and funding.

Step 1: Fill in Registration
Contact the NDIS and request the applicable NDIS Registration Forms. You can visit their website (www.ndis.gov.au) or contact them on 1800 800 110. Submit the Registration Form.
Step 2: Gather Supporting Documents
Once you’re accepted onto the NDIS, you will need to begin the process of gathering supporting documentation from your medical specialists, to help build your forthcoming funding as part of your plan.
You’ll need:
- Medical or allied health reports showing how your disability impacts daily life
We can assess you and provide an appropriate orthotic or prosthetic Assistive Technology report for you; this appointment and report will be required to be paid by yourself privately.
- Functional assessments (e.g. from an OT, psychologist, or physiotherapist)
Step 3: Submit an Access Request
Once completed, submit to the NDIS via their website at www.ndis.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 110.
Step 4: Attend a Planning Meeting
If your application is approved, you’ll be invited to a planning meeting with an NDIS planner or LAC. This meeting helps determine the types of supports and funding you’ll receive.
Step 5: Book with ALA
Make an appointment with one of our friendly and experienced orthotists or prosthetists to discuss your requirements.

Step 2: Assessment
Book an appointment with an ALA Prosthetist or Orthotist and we will assess your assistive technology needs.
Step 3: Quote & Approval
Your ALA clinician will write and submit a report and funding request to your relevant worker’s compensation body. They will then contact you directly regarding your funding approval.
Step 4: Begin Service Provision
Book an appointment with ALA for casting, manufacture, and provision of your Prosthesis or Orthosis.
Step 5: Maintenance
You can attend ALA as required for review and maintenance of existing assistive technology. Depending on the nature of your request, a new quote or approval may be required. Your clinician will assist you on a case-by-case basis.
TAC
Have you been involved in a road accident? If so, you may be eligible for funding through TAC or other road accident commissions.

NDIS & Funding
I am new to the NDIS and don't fully understand how I can use my funding for my orthotic or prosthetic needs - can you help me understand my plan?
Absolutely! We are highly experienced in assisting our NDIS clients to better understand your plans and funding. Our aim is to always support you in achieving your individual goals by providing the most suitable orthotic or prosthetic equipment. Just ask us how we can help!
I don’t have any Assistive Technology in my NDIS plan – can you still help me?
Yes, we most definitely can. We can arrange an appointment with one of our experienced clinicians to assess your individual needs. Following the assessment, we’ll prepare a recommendation report that can be submitted to the NDIS for consideration in your next plan or upcoming Plan Review. This may help include Assistive Technology tailored to your support requirements.
Why is it useful to provide my NDIS Plan to my clinician?
We appreciate that an NDIS plan is a personal document, however by attaching a copy of your NDIS plan (Plan dates, goals and all 3 Budget Support areas; especially the Capital (Assistive Technology) Budget, we can provide the most suitable supports and ensure that we are working within the funding available.
What is a Service Agreement and why should I sign one?
A Service Agreement is a formal arrangement between you (the participant) and ALA (the provider). It outlines the supports and services we will deliver—such as Assistive Technology equipment and devices—using your NDIS plan and funding.
The agreement also includes important details such as:
- Our cancellation policy for appointments and services
- How we charge for travel outside our clinic locations
- How you can provide feedback or lodge a complaint, either directly with us or through the NDIA

We typically provide a Service Agreement after your initial appointment and ask you to sign it to confirm your understanding and acceptance of the terms. If you have any questions, our friendly administration teams or your clinician is always available to clarify any part of the agreement.
Are there Medicare rebates for Orthotic services?
No, Orthotics are not currently a service subsidised by the Medicare Subsidy Scheme. However, Orthotic services are recognised as an essential health service and there are a number of other government subsidy schemes available to assist you in financing necessary orthotic care. Your Orthotist can discuss these options with you at your initial appointment.
Are orthoses covered by my private health insurance?
This will be dependent on the level of private health insurance you currently hold. You are best to speak with your health insurer directly to obtain this information.
We can provide you with a quote after your initial assessment so you can discuss the specifics with your insurance provider.
Please note that we currently do not offer HICAPS for rebates at point of transaction.
